The Alchemist

Recently read  The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I love good fiction, but rarely read it. The Alchemist is a story about a young shepherd named Santiago who is on a journey to fulfill his Personal Legend. It’s philosophical, it’s spiritual, and it’s entertaining. I couldn’t put it down.

I had a choice between this book and “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel for an extra credit literature project. I chose the latter, but there are always those chosen few over-achievers in a class who read both and brag to everyone else about it. Of the over-achieving group, most conceded that “The Alchemist” was a better book. I, however, enjoyed “life of Pi”, but do not publicly recommend it because it is very WEIRD.

You could say that The Alchemist has a few weird parts as well…but overall I think it’s a really good story and very well written. Based on the writing style alone I will definitely check out more of Paulo’s books.

Just finished this two nights ago. I thought it was a great book. Coelho has the most simplistic, yet vivid writing style I have ever encountered. I will definitely look into more of his writing in the future.

The Kite Runner is an excellent book. I am currently reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author.
